All dog owners, especially new puppy owners, are familiar with the "messiest" (pun intended) dog matter of all -- the question of how to house train your dog. As a dog owner all my life, I personally believe that we all need to kill off one common myth about dog toilet training.
What myth am I talking about? That if your dog has made a mess, you must show him or her the mess, scold it accordingly, and thereafter, it will never "do it" in that spot again. This is NOT how to house train your dog! Truth is the dog will have no idea what you are trying to say to it. Really!
First and foremost, if you have a new dog or puppy in your house, be observant. Look out for any signs of restlessness or discomfort. Most likely, in most such cases, your dog wants to go, and real soon!
Honestly, the answer to the question of how to house train your dog to do it at the right time and place is not that hard to find. Try the following dog toilet training step-by-step approach. It's worked with all the dogs I have had the pleasure of sharing life with in my 45 years.
1. Establish fixed times
One of the keys to this kind of training is ensuring a routine is established, Every dog needs to go right after waking after, 15 to 20 minutes after any meal, and right before bed-time
2. Tell your dog that it's time to do his/her business
It's best to tell your dog it's time for it to go. Use a phrase as a signal. For example, "Let's go poopies".
3. Use the same place every time
Again, routine is key. One of the best ways how to house train your dog is by bringing him or her to the same place every time it needs to do it. This way, he or she will know that this is the right spot, an "approved" spot.
4. Give your dog permission to go
Learning how to house train your dog is very similar to teaching it to do other things. To fetch, you would tell it to fetch, right? Or to heel, we would say "Heel".
Treat the matter of doing its business the same way. Once you are at the "business spot", give your dog a command like "OK, poopie here, poopie here!" This way, your dog knows it has your green light to go ahead.
Think about it. All effective dog training involves verbal commands.
If your dog happens to need to go while in the house, and it doesn't hear those magic words, it won't go. As I said earlier, this is where you need to be observant. If your dog starts to look restless or uncomfortable, then he or she is signaling its need to go.
5. Give your dog a sign of affirmation
Every dog needs its master's affirmation. So once it has done its business in the right place, praise it "Good dog!". This will only reinforce in his or her mind where and when you want it to go. Affirmation is crucial to train your dog effectively and for the long term.
